Approximately 17 million working days are lost to absenteeism and alcohol related illnesses each year with the overall cost to society thought to be around £20billion, £6.4 billion of which is borne by business.

A drug and alcohol policy should aim to support affected employees rather than punish them. If an employee admits to having a drug or alcohol related alcohol-related problem, your policy should seek to help them and encourage them to seek treatment, rather than lead to their dismissal.
